“I couldn’t get inside there fast enough to be nourished by other cancer patients and to know I was not alone. I could never buy what I got there, not ever.”
Gilda Radner of The Wellness Community (now the Cancer Support Community)

Gilda’s quest for support is echoed by many a person living with cancer. Their need for support spurred me to cofound the Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara over twenty-eight years ago.

Today I still want to make a difference in the lives of people living with cancer in our community! I am participating in the Hope Walk on June 15th, to raise money for and awareness of the Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura Santa Barbara. I walk in memory of my brother Larry Beye, who died of colorectal cancer, my mother and father, and in honor of the members of the support groups I have led at The Cancer Support Community.

As a current facilitator of three support groups, and as co-founder and past vice-president of programs, I see firsthand the power of the Cancer Support Community. Every day, I witness extraordinary courage, compassion and love as participants meet face to face to share their hopes, struggles and the emotional roller coaster of cancer. They gain hope, courage and strength from one another, laugh together and learn many practical things that help them continue on their path. Most importantly, they don’t feel so alone. They find enormous comfort in being with others who truly understand the depth of their experience in ways that family cannot. They are a community of people getting through this cancer experience together--- the Cancer Support Community.
CSC also supports loved ones, ages five to 95 who have or had a loved one with cancer.
I invite you to join me and my team, “Marty’s Mighty Warriors!” There are several ways to participate: 1) as a registered walker on June 15th, 2) as a donor, and 3) as a fund raiser among your friends and family. For example, fund raising can be done via FaceBook. Our web site is set up to handle all these options. Details can be found at cscvvsbhopewalk.rallybound.org. If you need help using the web site I can register you manually. There are three walk options, 3 miles, 5.5 miles and the option of walking one or two blocks. That’s where you will find me!
During the HopeWalk, I will be celebrating cancer survivors and remembering loved ones who fought the disease and are no longer with us. If you would like me to celebrate and remember someone important in your life that has been affected by cancer, send me their name and I will carry it with me during the HopeWalk.
If you cannot physically join me, I hope you will be with me in spirit on June 15th as I participate with my team, “Marty’s Mighty Warriors.” Celebrate life by taking a walk that day with those you love. Thank you in advance for your consideration and support of the Cancer Support Community and me.
With loving kindness,
